Okay, so going into this review I'd like to point out that when I first finished this novel about a month or two ago I didn't even take the time to craft a full review on my Goodreads, leaving it at one simple sentence mentioning the fact that I love both Tamlin and Rhys. This still holds true of course, but I wish I could have said more at the time having just come freshly off of the book and not now when it's dulled on me a bit. Between now and then I've not delved back into the Fantasy/Romance genre and stuck more with Thrillers for now so BEAR WITH ME as I try to remember particular details about what I did and didn't like about this book.
First of all, I bought the physical copy of this book as well as the second in this series and I love the addition of the map in the front of the book, as I feel it added a lot to my interest and worldbuilding in general. I liked being able to refer to the front of the book whenever a character mentioned the setting of the story, as it really helped me paint a picture in my mind of Prythian. I felt the worldbuilding in general was something well done, I like Maas' descriptions of beauty, nature, etc. in this world. The main character isn't one I totally resonate with, but I still find her likeable so far. Ultimately in this first novel, I struggle to write a lot of positives and negatives because it feels like a well rounded story in itself. At the end of this book, there were things I long for enough for a sequel to be had, but it wasn't ended on a cliffhanger, so I was well satisfied.
The one negative I had in this story was I felt the villain was very cheesy and not very intelligent. She felt superfluous and I didn't really understand her intentions well enough to fully get why she was doing what she was doing. By the end I was kind of like... "Well, I guess that happened". The conflict, to me, was neither here nor there. The reason why I gave this book an even 4 stars was because I did have fun reading it, it just didn't wow me particularly. I recommend it as a solid read of fantasy and steamy romance scenes. Because I thought the atmosphere and romance and worldbuilding were well written, it earned my even 4 stars (even though I wish to say it's closer to 3.75, but hey, that's ok). I hope to see better flushed out conflict that is more involved in the next novel in the series.
